Granny Irene

I’m not sure how old Granny would be today. I’ve never been good about remembering birth-years. Would she be 90? Mom, am I right? I know she has been gone now for 5 years and is missed very, very much. It’s so hard to believe it’s been 5 years. I had fun ‘remembering’ Granny Lois and wanted to do the same thing for Granny Irene. Here are some things I remember, please chime in on the comments section with your own remembrances…

I remember she always had Juicy Fruit chewing gum in her purse and would only give you a half a piece at a time.

I remember she always kept peppermint in her purse too. Mom, I think you do this now too.

I remember staying with her for a week every summer. I have so many memories from those weeks with her in Dawson. That week always included shopping and a trip to Calloway Gardens.

I remember her taking me to Calloway Gardens every summer. She always let us invite one of our ‘Dawson’ friends to go with us too. She and one of her friends would sit in the rocking chairs under the pavilion while me and Alice and our friends would play in the lake and on the beach.

I remember having sleep-overs in Dawson at her house with one of our ‘Dawson’ friends either at her house or at Mrs. Mervin’s.

I remember she loved to take her 3 grandkids shopping and was always very generous. I think she was largely responsible for our new school wardrobe each year.

I remember me and Alice always slept in her King size bed with her when we visited her in Dawson. We would get so tickled lying in bed at night and laughing at different things. She would laugh at us and then Alice and I would laugh at her uncontrollable laughter, it was an endless cycle. I think we sounded more like 3 teenagers having a sleep over more so than 2 granddaughters with their grandmother.

I remember her stirring up my ice-cream to soften it and make it like fresh homemade ice cream days after it had been churned. The expression on her face, well I guess you just had to be there.

I remember walking to and from First Baptist of Dawson on weekend visits to her house.

I remember Sunday afternoons on her front porch. All the adults sitting and talking and the kids playing in the front yard and picking up pecans from the lawn.

I remember watching T.V. on Saturday nights in her den while eating homeade ice cream.

On those same Saturday nights, I remember Alice and I scheming a plan to 'sneak' up on the adults while they watched T.V. We drew a schematic of the den complete with our route planned carefully. No way they would see us crawling behind the couch and under the coffee table.

I remember she always gave me and Alice a Madame Alexander doll for Christmas. That collection is still in Mom’s attic.

I remember she is largely responsible for my jewelry collection, generously giving me birthstone jewelry and many other rings and necklaces. I treasure each piece and although I don’t wear it daily, I try to wear one piece a week and always think of her when I do.

I remember going out with her and all of her ‘buddies’ in Dawson to play cards or eat at The Varsity. She was always so busy!

I remember eggs, over-easy with fried cornbread for breakfast. I’m hungry just thinking of it. The cornbread is something no one else has been able to duplicate since she died. I think it was the fresh cornmeal that made it so difficult to duplicate.

I remember throwing table-scraps across the fence to her neighbors’ chickens after each meal at her house.

I remember pulling under her carport on Friday nights after dark and her opening the carport door in her gown and robe giving us each a hug and kiss as we walked into her home. “Hey Deezy, Hey Doodlebug, Hey T-Ron.” We each had a nick-name.

Most of all I remember how much she loved us. We were her only 3 grandkids and as an adult I can vividly remember how proud she was of us as kids and how much she loved us all. Our comfort rests in the knowledge that she is with Granddaddy experiencing the splendor of Heaven and we will one day be reunited with her again. What an awesome day that will be!

Wow, Heidi! You got me too- tears pouring down! I was fine until the very end, when you wrote about our Friday night arrivals, and her kissing us each as we walked in, calling us by 'her' names for us. I can hear it like it was yesterday. I miss her SO much, and memories just flooded my mind remembering all you mentioned.

I remember how tight she would hug you, and how she'd giggle and squeal as she did, so excited to see you.

I remember helping her unload her trunk when she'd come for a visit always looking to see what kind of cake she had made. She'd always bring at least one. Lemon-cheesecake was my favorite, and she would always let me eat as much icing with my finger, as I wanted. Mom even has a picture of me doing it. Yum!

I remember when she'd bake a cake at our house, or hers, she would give you big spoonfuls of the batter, not just a little off the side of the bowl! (think she's the reason I'm such a sweets junkie?)

I remember her paying me like $50. to wash her car when I was maybe 12 or 13-years-old. I'm sure I did a 'great' job.

Heidi, you hit most of the highlights well. I had forgotten about us sneaking up on the adults in the den, and how they always acted surprised, like our plan had actually worked. :) And, along with that homemade ice cream, we'd always watch The Golden Girls. Still love that show, I must admit.

Thank you for honoring her so well, and wording it all so great. I know she's smiling reading it.

I am SO glad she's in Heaven and happy and healthy with her John. I just wish she could see my boys, and they could see her. They would LOVE her! But, like Ronnie told her earlier, Mom is just like her, and treats our kids just like she did us!!! So, they have a 'Granny' too! Thanks, Mom!

Love you, Granny!!! Happy Birthday!!!

Mama would have been 92 today. Wow!!! It is sooooo hard to believe she has been gone for 5 years.

What stands out about Mama to me is how UNSELFISH she was. She was always cooking, buying, cleaning or working for us all the time. I remember when her health was so good she would come up here and start cleaning my house, especially helping me wash windows. Then she would go in the yard and start pulling weeds and edging the yard with a shelve. I can't remember a time when she or she and Daddy would come to the house that she didn't bring us GOOD food already cooked, vegetables and meat from her freezer and clothes. Then when we went down there she always had chicken and dressing cooked for us for Sunday dinner and she had steak and gravy ready for us to eat when we got there on Friday nights. Of course her "runnie" eggs cooked on Saturday morning with her fried cornbread was always the best. She always tooks us to Albany shopping on Saturdays also.

I remember one day she called me and said she was going to be rebaptized. She said that when her preacher would preach sometime she would doubt her salvation and she wanted to be sure she had that nailed down and taken care of. So Bro Mallard rebaptized her. We did not go and I will always regret not going down to Dawson for that. Can't remember why now but it doesn't matter, we should have been there for her.

Mama called us every Saturday night at 7:00pm just to check on us to see how we were doing. She was as regular as clock work about her calls.

I remember right after Daddy died that she and Mrs Hilda were already planning a trip to the Holy Land. Daddy and Mr. Paul didn't care if Mama and Mrs. Hilda went, they just didn't want to go. Daddy did not like to travel at all. So after Daddy died Mama decided to go on with the trip. Their pastor, Br Mallard, wanted to go and he could go free if enough people signed up for the trip. Well, he did not get enough people to go so he was going to have to stay home. SOOOO Mama bought him a ticket so he could go also. Just another way Mama was so generous!!!!!

I remember when I was little she always bought me new Easter clothes, from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet. EVERYTHING I had on on Easter Sundays was new!!! Back then you also go a Easter hat also.

I remember when Mama first started wearing slacks. Back then Mama only wore dresses. Daddy had gone to work and we were living in the old house then. After Daddy went to work, Mama put on her slacks. (She hadn't told Daddy she had a pair) Mama was in the back yard with me and Granddaddy (Daddy's Dad) came driving up in the yard. Wish you could have seen mama run in the house before he saw her. It was so funny but it wasn't to her.

Heidi, I guess you have gotten me started about Mama and my mind is just running with things about her now. She was so full of fun and she did love life. I love to hear her and your Dad get tickled about something. Your Dad still quotes you, Alice, when we were going to one of Thearon's ballgames and we were carrying a LOT of quilts and blankets to cover up with. You said people would look at us and say "Well look at them" Mama laughed and laughed over and over about that and Your Dad loved to bring it up and get her tickled. She was just sooooo much fun and she did love yall!!!!!!
